2011

I’ve created this site to assist me in finding a part-time position working in a patient care role.  After working as an IT (Information Technology) professional for over 2 decades, this is the first in a series of steps to bring about a career change, that will lead to a role as a nurse practitioner.  My plan is to get a 2nd Degree Bachelor in Nursing degree from GVSU (Grand Valley State University), get a position as an R.N., and then get a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.

As of December 2011, I have just completed my last pre-requisite courses for the ASD (Accelerated Second Degree) nursing program at GVSU.  I applied to the ASD program this past semester, and will find out in January if I was accepted.  Since I have gotten A’s in all nursing decision courses, I am confident I will be accepted into the program.

Why am I doing this now?  Because an amazing opportunity presented itself.  In June of 2010, during one of the most turbulent economies the furniture industry has experienced, my former employer had their 3rd round of corporate down-sizings within a two-year period.  My position was eliminated in this last round of cuts.  As a result, I became eligible for generous funding to return to school.

This funding made it possible to pursue my dream of switching to a career in healthcare.  After completing my 4th semester of pre-requisite courses for the ASD Nursing program, I am more certain than ever that I made the right choice in pursuing a career in healthcare.
